We will require agencies to be more effective & efficient in achieving results & will ensure that public tax dollars are being spent wisely.”
Holding Government Accountable
Governor Chris Gregoire is committed to building trust and confidence in state government. She holds every state employee personally accountable for doing his or her part to move Washington forward.
Plain Talk
Governor Gregoire believes citizens should be able to communicate easily with government. That’s why she banned bureaucratic jargon and requires all agencies use Plain Talk to write clear letters, applications and instructions when communicating with Washingtonians.
Focus on Performance
Governor Gregoire is a strong proponent of the Priorities of Government budgeting process. She uses this clear, straight-forward approach to establish the state’s highest priorities and identify how we can invest our resources to get the greatest possible return.
She created the Government Management Accountability and Performance program to hold state agencies accountable for delivering results – showing Washingtonians how their tax dollars are being spent and asking them if state government is successfully addressing their concerns. The program enables Governor Gregoire to evaluate which programs are achieving results and to take action in “real time” to make course corrections.
Governor Gregoire signed into law a bill to create performance audits, another tool to ensure that citizens are getting what they expect and taxpayers are getting what they paid for.
To make government more accountable to citizens, Governor Gregoire held town hall meetings across the state to hear directly from the people where government should be focusing its attention and what success would look like to them.
The Right Employees, in the Right Jobs
Governor Gregoire is streamlining state government by eliminating 1,000 middle managers from the state payroll and directing state agencies to re-emphasize the importance of front-line staff. This will save the state an estimated $50 million.
