Inslee statement on decision to drop citizenship question from census

Story Body

Gov. Jay Inslee issued a statement today about the Trump administration’s decision to drop efforts to include a new citizenship question on the 2020 census. Census officials said they must start printing forms in the coming months and a definitive court ruling was necessary to include the question.

“The Trump administration made the right decision to drop efforts to add a new citizenship question to the 2020 census. As the Supreme Court recognized last week, the administration has not shown any compelling reason for adding this question at the last minute. Even the Trump administration knew they were on the losing side of this effort.”

“While this victory helps ensure that each Washingtonian is counted, we know our work continues. That’s why we remain committed to ensuring a complete count in Washington state.”
