Gov. Jay Inslee released a statement today congratulating Rep. Laurie Jinkins on being sworn in as speaker of the state House of Representatives. Jinkins is the first female and openly lesbian speaker in Washington state history.
“I was filled with pride and optimism on the House floor today as I watched Speaker Jinkins take the gavel. This historic event means our state's future is bright. She is an extremely hard-working, smart and dedicated public servant. I look forward to Laurie's leadership and I am grateful for her deep commitment to the rights of disadvantaged communities and families’ access to health care.
“I also want to thank Rep. John Lovick for his service as acting speaker. We know John will continue his exceptional work for the 44th Legislative District and all Washingtonians.”
