Gov. Jay Inslee today appointed Mary Kuney to the Spokane County Commission. Earlier this month, the commission could not agree on filling a vacant seat and voted that the appointment be made instead by the governor.
Kuney is currently the chief deputy auditor for Spokane County. She has served in the Washington State Auditor's Office as assistant audit manager and assistant state auditor, has worked as a senior accountant in the private sector, and owned a small business.
"Mary has deep roots in Spokane, and throughout this appointment process she received broad support from the community," Inslee said. "She is well-positioned to bring county employees and stakeholders together."
Kuney is a certified public accountant and has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Gonzaga University.
She serves on the board of Hutton Settlement, which provides safe, stable housing for children, and also on the board of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Spokane County..
Kuney's appointment is effective immediately. To retain the position, she will need to run in a special election November 2018.
