Inslee statement on federal opioid public health emergency declaration

Story Body

"Calling attention to our nation’s opioid epidemic is an important effort. Last year, I issued an executive order to launch a concerted effort to prevent and treat opioid use disorders.

"While we appreciate the president’s declaration today, it is clear additional action will be needed from the federal government to address a crisis of this scope and magnitude. I look forward to learning more about how our state can work with the federal government to improve treatment options for Washingtonians.

"All levels of government must dedicate further resources to end the opioid crisis, and not merely shift dollars around, or away from other important health care initiatives.

"Effectively responding to the opioid epidemic also demands a commitment to preserving Medicaid and protecting health coverage for addiction treatment services. We cannot hope to end the crisis without committing to first do no harm."
